DALCROZE EURYTHMICS
The study of Dalcroze Eurhythmics is not simply the study of music but the study of life and the development of artistry through the study of rhythm. It is based on the work of Emile Jacques-Dalcroze, a Swiss composer/actor/educator.
Each lesson is divided into 3 parts: eurhythmics, solfege and improvisation. The dalcroze curriculum uses the vehicle of games simply because they are fun, non-threatening and come with their own set of rules. The games are divided into 4 categories: follow, quick reaction, replacement and canon. Eurhythmics permits the infusion of the human body into every aspect of music learning and music making. This involvement of the human body is the hallmark of Dalcroze and makes this approach unique among all others. Dalcroze Eurhythmics develops the 6 th sense of kinesthesia. This sense gives the student a brain map of how much tension to send to their muscles. New muscle groups are developed as one learns. The more senses you integrate the deeper the learning. Eurhythmics is a multifaceted education.
During the semester all required subjects are covered: beat, articulation, phrasing, meter, subdivions, tempo, syncopation, mixed meter, reading, writing, dictation , improvisation, sightsinging, music history via active music listening. Each lesson more than meets New York State Standards. Within a successful eurhythmics class there are also concrete mental and emotional goals: development of attention and awareness, conversion of attention to concentration, social integration and responses to and expression of all nuances of sound feeling. Creativity manifests itself in many forms. Students are allowed to grow at their own pace. The students learn to work together. There is interplay among individuals, which result in group-improvisations that provide a creative ensemble experience. Each week the class will be exposed to various musical objectives. It is imperative that these lessons be experienced and enjoyed! Dalcroze 1
