Pre-Arrival Information for Incoming Students

Welcome and congratulations on your acceptance to Mahanaim!  Please refer to the steps below for information on preparing for your arrival to Mahanaim.  Here you’ll find instructions on requesting a Form I-20, applying for your student visa, and more!


STEP 1: REQUEST MAHANAIM FORM I-20


Complete required I-20 Request Form on our website(mahanaim.com/request-i-20) – sending copies of your supplemental immigration and financial documentation to ensure timely review of your request.

IMPORTANT: Office of International Affairs will not review requests for immigration documents until your admission is cleared by Office of Admissions. 

 


STEP 2: CHECK I-20 FOR ACCURACY


Upon receipt of your Form I-20, review it carefully to confirm the biographical information matches your passport exactly. Your given, middle and surname must appear exactly as they do in your passport. Your date of birth should be in month/day/year format, and all other information must be correct.

If there are any mistakes, please contact our office immediately by e-mail: student@mahanaim.com. In the subject line, write “I-20 Correction” and include your full name and Stony Brook ID#. Within the body of the email, indicate the incorrect information (i.e. name spelling, date of birth, etc.).

 


STEP 3: PAY THE SEVIS I-901 FEE


After you receive your Mahanaim issued I-20, please remember to pay the mandatory, one-time SEVIS I-901 Fee online here.  Print a copy of your SEVIS fee payment receipt and have it with you when applying for your M-1 Visa at a U.S. Embassy/Consulate and when entering the U.S.

 


STEP 4: APPLY FOR AN M-1 VISA


If you are outside the U.S. and do not have a valid M-1 Visa, follow the steps below to apply for your student visa at a U.S. Embassy/Consulate in your home country:

  1. Pay the SEVIS fee at www.fmjfee.com
  2. Schedule an appointment with a U.S. Embassy/Consulate – www.usembassy.gov
  3. Take your Mahanaim I-20, letter of admission, valid passport, SEVIS fee receipt, MRV (visa application) fee receipt, passport style photos (if applicable), and financial documents to your visa interview appointment.

 

Note:  Canadian citizens are exempt from Step 3, but must present their valid passport, Mahanaim I-20, SEVIS fee payment receipt at the port of entry to the U.S., and will hold M-1 status in the U.S. during their program at Mahanaim.

STEP 5: HEALTH REQUIREMENTS


Keeping you safe and healthy is a top priority at Mahanaim, therefore you must complete and return the following form to Health Office:

  • MMR/Meningitis Form: This form is to be completed and signed off by your physician.  If you are not 18 years old yet, your parent or guardian must fill out and sign.

 

Return completed forms to Health Office two weeks prior to orientation.  Forms may be faxed to: (631) 935-1947, or mailed to: Health Office, 300 Nassau Rd, Mahanaim, Huntington, NY 11743

 


STEP 6: ARRIVING TO THE UNITED STATES


You may enter the U.S. with your M-1 and Mahanaim I-20 up to (but no earlier than) 30 days before the start date indicated on your Mahanaim issued I-20.

Directions To Mahanaim

Students have the option of using public transportation to get to Mahanaim. The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) Huntington Station is conveniently located close by Mahanaim campus. Here are different ways on how to get to the campus.

Public transportation from New York John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK):

From JFK airport, take the AIRTRAIN to Jamaica station for the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). The $5 trip to Jamaica station lasts approximately 5 minutes. From the Jamaica station, take the LIRR (Port Jefferson line, eastbound) to the Huntington station, about a 1 hour ride. One-way fares range from $8.25 to $11.25, depending on the time of day.

Purchase your LIRR ticket from one of the ticket machines before boarding the train. You may purchase your ticket on the train (cash only) however there is an additional fee on board the train. The ticket machines accept U.S. Currency in small denominations, credit and debit cards.

Public transportation from New York City (NYC):

From Penn Station (34th Street and 7th Avenue), take the long Island Railroad (LIRR)’s Port Jefferson line to the Huntington station.
Public transportation from Newark Airport (EWR):

Students arriving from Newark Liberty International Airport, Click Here for how to get from EWR to New York City Penn Station. From New York Penn Station take the LIRR train to Mahanaim.


STEP 7: OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS ORIENTATION 


International Student Orientation is for all incoming international students in M-1 status. This orientation is designed to help you learn about and understand important immigration regulations and procedures required of M-1 students and to assist you in adjusting to Mahanaim.
