On February 22, 2013, the Gracias Music at Mahanaim students were invited to the Upper-Room Christian High School for the Mahanaim Concert Tour.
Music school students gathered their hearts amidst the busy schedule, and showed the students that classical music is not boring and difficult to listen to, by approaching the youths with a friendly and familiar program. As students introduced themselves and the pieces they will perform, both performers and audience were able to interact and become comfortable with each other in a short amount of time.
The concert tour opened with a flute quartet by Dufor. Students were mesmerized seeing a performance of four flutes and listening to the harmony of the music.
The next piece was a performance by baritone Hyeonchul Park and Soprano Zion Byun, as they sang a duet called ‘La ci dalem la mano.’ The students were excited at the scene where the baritone Hyeonchul Park handed a rose over to Soprano Zion Byun.
Other classical pieces included a clarinet solo by Hyemin Lee, who played ‘Gabriel’s Oboe.’
The students were fascinated to learn a new way to play the violin, by piccicato. The song ‘Pizzicato Polka,’ and then ‘Por una Caveza’ were then performend for them.
The men’s quartet sang touching folk songs such as ‘Ring de Banjo,” and ‘The Rose.’
Lastly, the souls of the students were uplifted as they heard the choir perform, ‘Walking down the street,’ ‘I’ve Got Rhythm,’ and ‘You Raise me up.’
The performance was met with a great round of applause and a standing ovation. Pastor Dono, the Principal and Pastor of the school esclaimed, “Bravo!” and invited Yeongsuk Jung back out for a ‘How low can you go” singing competition.
The experience opened many students hearts and mind toward classical music. Many wanted to know how they too can begin to play and perform such music.
One music student exclaimed, “ till now, as I studied music, I didn’t have a clear goal, and I just played for my own satisfaction, but as a I performed for these students, it allowed me to think back to my main purpose. God is working even through a lacking person such as I. Rather than what I gave, there is much more that I received. Through this concert, I was able to see that I am alive.” – Sujin Hahm (Gracias Music at Mahanaim, viola major)
This Mahanaim Concert Tour was a great experience for not only the audience, but the performer themselves. Through continuous performances and concerts, we would like to continue to renew the heart of bringing joy to the lives of others.
